It is a culture of hardness of heart and little empathy for the “other”. My daughter tells me she is reminded every day that she lives in “Texas” where the culture is harsh and unforgiving. O’Conner’s voice resonates with what it is to be; to be identified as being this or that and Grace may or may not belong to you—-your culture and God will decide for you.
